As most of you know, I am currently attending massage therapy school and plan to be finished by the end of the year. One of the many benefits of spending time surrounded by so many holistically-minded peers and mentors is the amount of useful knowledge that is shared. I’ve been looking for a natural joint and connective tissue supplement that I can use on a regular basis and #1 not spend too much money, #2 preferably not be in pill form, and #3 be natural. Enter in Great Lakes Gelatin, Collagen Hydrolysate (Kosher) 16-Ounce. The Gelatin is from beef hide, which is then ground into a fine powder so it is cold-water soluble and absorbs rapidly into your bloodstream. It contains the glucosamine and chondroitin compounds found in many joint support supplements but without the artificial capsule, and is an all-natural source of protein, 1 tbsp contains 6g of protein. It contains 20mg of sodium, which is great for retaining water during prolonged exercise. I mix 1-2 tbsp in a jar with water, 1000mg Vitamin C, and a squirt of lemon to add flavor. Over the first month of taking it I noticed many of my regular hot spots had calmed down, specifically my knees and elbows, and my joints felt more fluid and lubricated in the morning and throughout the day. For the first 2 weeks, I took 2 tbsp’s both in the morning and evening. After 2 weeks, simply taking it before bed seemed to be enough to maintain the noticeable effects. It’s been the perfect addition to my longer hike days as an electrolyte drink that is also helping support my joints.
